A complete travel guide to Taiwan’s seasonal green coastline — including the best time to visit, tide conditions, and how to get there without a car.

Overview
You’ve probably heard of Taiwan’s “Matcha Mountain” — but did you know there’s also a Matcha Coast?

Laomei Green Reef is one of Taiwan’s most unique seasonal coastal landscapes. Every spring, this otherwise ordinary shoreline transforms into a vivid green reef, as algae grow across naturally formed stone grooves.
Recognized by CNN as one of Taiwan’s “8 Hidden Gems,” this phenomenon only lasts for a short period each year — making timing the most important factor when planning your visit.
This is a highly time-sensitive destination — outside the spring season or during high tide, the famous green reef may be barely visible.
Laomei Green Reef at a Glance
- Type: Coastal geological formation + seasonal algae phenomenon (not a hiking trail)
- Difficulty: Easy (flat coastal walk)
- Distance: ~0.5–1 km (along shoreline)
- Duration: 30–60 minutes
- Entrance Fee: Free
- Reservation Required: No
- Best Season: From Mid-March to Early May (peak: early April)
- Public Transport: Accessible (no car needed)
- Key Requirement: Visit during low tide
This is a time-sensitive destination — outside of spring, the “green reef” effect disappears completely.

Who Is Laomei Green Reef Best For?
- Travelers visiting Taiwan during spring (March–May)
- Visitors looking for a unique seasonal natural phenomenon
- Travelers who prefer easy-access destinations without hiking
- Anyone planning a north coast day trip from Taipei

Highlights (What Makes It Unique)
Rare Seasonal “Matcha Coast” Phenomenon
- The reef turns bright green due to algae growth
- Only visible for a few weeks per year
- Often compared to a natural “matcha-colored coastline”

Unique Geological Formation
- Formed from volcanic rock from the Datun Mountains
- Long-term wave erosion created parallel stone grooves
- These grooves trap water which is ideal for algae growth

Recognized Hidden Gem
- Selected by CNN as one of Taiwan’s “8 Hidden Gems”
- Popular among photographers, but still relatively niche for international travelers

Why Does It Turn Green?
The green reef forms due to a combination of geology, seasonal conditions, and ocean dynamics.
- The coastline is made of volcanic rock from the Datun Mountains.
- Over time, wave erosion created parallel stone grooves.
- After the northeast monsoon, waves continuously wash over these rock surfaces.
- This creates an ideal environment for algae such as sea lettuce to grow rapidly.
Result
A short-lived seasonal bloom that transforms the coastline into a vivid green “matcha-like” landscape.
Best Time to Visit (Critical Planning Info)
Seasonal Window
- From Mid-March to Early May
- Peak conditions: Early April
Tidal Timing (Essential)
- Visit 1–2 hours before or after low tide, when the reef is most exposed and the green algae are easiest to see.
- If you visit at high tide, much of the reef becomes submerged, making the green algae far less visible.
- Check the official tide forecast for Shimen District before your visit.
- You can also check the live camera for current conditions.

Before your visit, check both weather and sea conditions to avoid poor visibility or unsafe waves:

Things to Know Before You Go
- 🚫 Do not walk on the green reef. The algae-covered rocks are extremely slippery and can be dangerous, especially near incoming waves. Walking on the reef also damages the fragile ecosystem.
- 🌊 Sudden waves and seawater surges can splash through the stone grooves unexpectedly, even during low tide.
- 📅 The best viewing period is typically from mid-March to early May, with peak conditions usually occurring in early April.
- ⏰ Visit during low tide for the best visibility. At high tide, most of the reef is submerged, making the green algae difficult to see.
- ☀️ For the best experience, visit on a sunny day during low tide in early April, when the algae are typically at their brightest green.
- 🪨 Outside the spring season, the algae disappear and the coastline returns to its natural rocky appearance.
- 🚶 Laomei Green Reef is not a hiking trail. It is a short coastal viewing area that can easily be visited as part of a north coast day trip.
Nearby Attractions
If you’re visiting Laomei Green Reef, these nearby stops can easily be combined into a north coast day trip:
Fugui Cape Lighthouse
Taiwan’s northernmost point, popular for coastal walks and sunset views.

Fugui Fishing Harbor
A well-known seafood harbor near Laomei Green Reef, popular for fresh seafood and local coastal dining.

Shimen Arch
A natural sea arch formation located along the dramatic rocky coastline near Shimen.
Baishawan Beach
One of northern Taiwan’s most popular sandy beaches, ideal for relaxing after exploring the coast.

Final Thoughts
Laomei Green Reef is not about distance or difficulty — it’s about timing and conditions.
If you visit during the right season and at low tide, this is one of the highest visual-reward, lowest-effort natural destinations in northern Taiwan.
However, without proper timing, the experience can be significantly diminished — making planning essential.
