A Brief History of Bishan Temple
Bishan Temple is dedicated to Chen Yuanguang (陳元光), a military and political figure from the Tang dynasty who played an important role in the development of Zhangzhou in present-day Fujian.
He later became known as Kai Zhang Sheng Wang (開漳聖王), meaning the “Holy King who developed Zhangzhou,” and became an important guardian deity for people from Zhangzhou.
As immigrants from Zhangzhou settled in Taiwan, they brought their religious traditions with them. Bishan Temple became an important place of worship for the local community in Neihu.
According to local legend, a sacred stone associated with Kai Zhang Sheng Wang once miraculously helped drive away bandits threatening the settlement. Local residents later built a small shrine here, which gradually developed into the temple complex you see today.
The temple has been renovated and expanded several times over the centuries, but it remains an active place of worship and an important part of Neihu’s local history.
As you explore the temple, look closely at the traditional craftsmanship throughout the complex, including the carved columns and elaborate decorations on the rooftops.
