Escape the crowds and discover a quieter side of Taipei with a local temple, mountain views, cherry blossoms, and an easy outdoor experience.

Overview
If you want to visit a Taiwanese temple in Taipei, you probably already know about places like Longshan Temple and Xingtian Temple.
But if you’d rather experience a temple that feels more local and less touristy, Bishan Temple (碧山巖開漳聖王廟) is worth knowing about.
Tucked into the hills of Neihu, this historic mountain temple is still largely visited by local Taiwanese rather than international tourists. On weekdays, you can often enjoy the peaceful temple grounds without the crowds you’ll find at Taipei’s better-known temples.

And the best part?
You’re not just coming here to see a temple!
From the temple grounds, you can look out over Taipei 101 and the surrounding mountains, explore the nearby trails and countryside, and occasionally spot planes crossing the sky.

Downstairs from the main temple, the Bishan Temple Arts & Cultural Leisure Center (碧山巖藝文休閒中心) offers coffee and tea on a pay-as-you-wish basis, with outdoor seating overlooking the city.
If you’re looking for a different way to experience Taiwan’s temple culture — with mountain scenery, easy outdoor exploration, and a great view of Taipei thrown in — Bishan Temple makes an excellent half-day escape from the city.

A Brief History of Bishan Temple

Bishan Temple is dedicated to Chen Yuanguang (陳元光), a military and political figure from the Tang dynasty who played an important role in the development of Zhangzhou in present-day Fujian.
He later became known as Kai Zhang Sheng Wang (開漳聖王), meaning the “Holy King who developed Zhangzhou,” and became an important guardian deity for people from Zhangzhou.

As immigrants from Zhangzhou settled in Taiwan, they brought their religious traditions with them. Bishan Temple became an important place of worship for the local community in Neihu.
According to local legend, a sacred stone associated with Kai Zhang Sheng Wang once miraculously helped drive away bandits threatening the settlement. Local residents later built a small shrine here, which gradually developed into the temple complex you see today.
The temple has been renovated and expanded several times over the centuries, but it remains an active place of worship and an important part of Neihu’s local history.
As you explore the temple, look closely at the traditional craftsmanship throughout the complex, including the carved columns and elaborate decorations on the rooftops.

Best Time to Visit Bishan Temple
Bishan Temple can be visited all year round, but the experience changes depending on what you want to see.
Experience | Best Time |

Best Taipei views | Clear, dry days |
Sunset | Late afternoon |
Night views | After sunset |
Plane spotting | Daytime |
Coffee & tea | 10:00 AM–5:00 PM |
For the Best Views
Choose a clear day if possible.
Taipei is often humid and hazy, and poor visibility can make Taipei 101 and the distant skyline much harder to see.

For Sunset & Night Views
Arriving in the late afternoon is ideal.
You can explore the temple while there is still daylight, enjoy a coffee downstairs, watch the sunset, and then stay to see Taipei light up after dark.

For Cherry Blossoms
February to March is generally the best period, but flowering times vary from year to year.
If the blossoms are your main reason for visiting, check recent local conditions before making a special trip.
