  • The dramatic “Thread of Sky” — a narrow rock passage carved through solid stone

Shanjian Road Trail Highlights

Aqueduct Bridge (水圳橋)

Locally known as the “Three-Layer Bridge” (三層橋), this is the highlight of the hike — and something you won’t see anywhere else in Taiwan.

Because three bridges from different historical eras are stacked vertically over the same creek, the structure forms a rare three-layer bridge:

  • Top: Post-WWII pedestrian bridge
  • Middle: 1935 Japanese-era industrial water flume bridge
  • Bottom: Qing Dynasty stone arch bridge

You can carefully climb down to the stream below and view all three layers from beneath — a perspective most visitors miss.

On warm days, some hikers even dip their feet in the shallow creek and relax in the shade.

Locals sometimes joke that the stream below is a small “gold panning spot,” since traces of gold were historically found in this area during the Jiufen–Jinguashi mining era.

Of course, you’re unlikely to strike it rich — but the idea adds a fun connection to the region’s gold-mining history.

It’s part history lesson, part hidden oasis.

The “Thread of Sky” (一線天)

This narrow rock passage was originally blasted open during the mining era to create a water channel. You’ll squeeze between massive rocks — just wide enough for one person.

Locals also playfully call it “Mo Ru Xiang (摸乳巷),” which literally translates to “Breast-Touching Lane.” The name comes from how narrow the passage is — you may need to turn sideways and squeeze through, brushing against the rock walls.

It’s short, slightly dramatic, and very memorable.

How to Get to Shanjian Road Trail

The smartest way to do this hike is downhill. Start high up at “Geding (隔頂) bus stop” and walk down toward the sea.

By Private Charter (Best for Families & Groups)

Public transport works well — but if you want flexibility and comfort, a private charter is the easiest way to explore this area in one day.

If you’re traveling with kids, elderly parents, or simply don’t want to deal with bus transfers and tight schedules, a private car charter makes the day significantly smoother.

Instead of navigating multiple buses, you can turn this into a relaxed Northeast Coast day trip and combine:

  • Jiufen Old Street
  • Golden Waterfall
  • Baoshi Mountain
  • Northeast Coast

It’s especially helpful if:
– You’re short on time
– You’re visiting Taiwan for the first time
– You prefer flexibility over fixed bus timetables

👉 Check availability & prices here:

  • KKDay option – Taipei ↔ Jiufen / Jinguashi / North Coast (Multi-language driver available)
  • Klook Option – Taipei Departure Private Car to Jiufen / Shifen / Yehliu

By Car/Scooter

  • Navigation: Geziding Parking Lot, Jiufen.
  • Parking:
    • Weekdays: NT$150 per entry

    • No temporary parking allowed near the trailhead.
  • Logistics: Since this is a one-way hike, you will need to retrieve your vehicle afterward. You can take a bus from Guashan Elementary School Stop back up to Geding Parking Lot. (Google Maps)

Nearby Attractions

If you have extra time after finishing the hike, these nearby spots are easy additions to your Jiufen–Jinguashi itinerary.

Qitang Old Street (祈堂老街)

Qitang Old Street

A peaceful alternative to Jiufen Old Street, Qitang Old Street sits quietly in Jinguashi with narrow stone stairways, traditional houses, and retro cafés.

One of its most photogenic spots is the colorful “Rainbow Staircase” — a bright painted stairway that adds a surprising splash of color to the historic mining town atmosphere.

It’s calm, charming, and far less crowded than Jiufen.

Golden Waterfall (黃金瀑布)

Just a short bus ride or downhill walk from the trail’s end. The waterfall’s orange color comes from mineral oxidation — not actual gold — creating one of the most striking natural scenes in northern Taiwan.
