Overview

Located in the hot spring town of Guguan in Taichung, Baimao Mountain (白毛山) — also written as Baimaoshan — stands at 1,522 meters and is the sixth tallest of the Guguan Seven Heroes (谷關七雄), a series of mid-altitude peaks popular among local hikers. Among them, Baimao Mountain stands out for its rare panoramic summit views, earning it a legendary reputation in Taiwan’s hiking community.

This spectacular trail is famed for its dramatic ridgeline views and the iconic “Sky Ridge Stairs”—a photogenic wooden staircase that appears to climb straight into the clouds.

Top Reasons to Hike Baimao Mountain:

  • Challenging Yet Accessible Trail – Forest-shaded paths, steep ascents, and rope-assisted sections create a rewarding adventure that’s tough but doable.
  • Instagram-famous “Sky Ridge Stairs” – Climb a knife-edge ridge with 360° views of the Dajia River Valley and surrounding peaks.
  • Public Transit-Friendly – Direct buses from Taichung HSR Station, Taichung Train Station, or Fengyuan Train Station drop you right at the Bailu Suspension Bridge (白鹿吊橋).
  • Post-Hike Treat – Cool off with Baileng Popsicles (白冷冰棒), artisan frozen treats made from fresh mountain spring water. Local specialty flavors available only in the Guguan area.

And the best part? It’s possible to complete this adventure as a car-free day trip. Whether you’re coming from HSR Taichung Station, Taichung Train Station, or Fengyuan Train Station, there are direct buses that get you to the trailhead!

*Note: “Shan” (山) means “mountain” in Chinese. You may see this peak (白毛山) referred to as either Baimao Mountain or Baimaoshan on maps, trail signs, and guidebooks.

Trail Highlights

What to See on Baimao Mountain Trail?

  • Bailu Suspension Bridge (白鹿吊橋)
    • At 250 meters long, this is the longest suspension bridge in Taichung City, spanning the Dajia River and serving as the gateway to your Baimao Mountain hike.
    • The bridge offers stunning views of the river valley and surrounding mountains, providing an impressive start to your adventure.
  • Sky Ridge Stairs (天梯)
    • A wooden staircase built along a knife-edge ridge of exposed rock, creating the breathtaking illusion of stairs ascending directly into the sky with dramatic drop-offs on both sides.
    • Offers 360° panoramic  views of surrounding peaks and the Dajia River Valley below, making it the ultimate Instagram hotspot and the emotional high point of your hike.
  • Baimo Mountain Summit (白毛山) – 1,522m
    • The sixth-highest peak in the Guguan Seven Heroes series, marking your triumphant achievement after the challenging ascent
    • Though the summit itself has limited views due to forest coverage, it features a wooden pavilion where you can rest, refuel, and celebrate your climb.

Planning Your Hike

Trail Conditions & Gear

  • Steep Start: The first 0.7 km of the main trail is a continuous steep uphill climb. Pace yourself, adjust your breathing, and avoid rushing — especially in hot or humid weather.
  • Trail Markers: Numbered trail markers are placed every 100 meters along the main trail (total of 24), helping hikers monitor their progress and avoid getting lost.
  • Gloves: Gloves recommended for rope-assisted climbs.
  • Footwear: Hiking boots recommended due to primitive trail conditions and slippery surfaces after rain.

Facilities

  • Toilets: No toilets at the trailhead or along the trail. However, you can use the restroom at the shop across from Bailu Suspension Bridge (Guguan Bailu Pickles|谷關白鹿泡菜) if you make a purchase.

Transportation

  • Driving & Parking: Limited parking near Bailu Suspension Bridge (10–15 spots). Extra parking at Bailu Park (~10 min walk).
  • Access Road Warning: The 2.7 km uphill road from Bailu Suspension Bridge to the trailhead can be ridden by scooter, saving about an hour of hiking. However, the road is rough, narrow, and has limited passing space. Not recommended for low-clearance vehicles or drivers unfamiliar with Taiwan’s rural mountain roads.

Additional Tips

  • Mobile Signal: Generally good throughout the trail.
  • Avoiding Crowds: Popular on weekends — arrive early for clear photos at the Sky Ridge Stairs.
